After an accident, many people wonder whether they should call a lawyer immediately, handle the insurance process themselves, or wait to see how things develop. There is no universal answer. A small property-damage claim and a collision involving surgery, disputed fault, or several insurance policies present very different issues.
The most useful question is not “Do I need a lawyer because I was in an accident?” It is “Are there legal, medical, insurance, or evidence issues that I do not feel comfortable evaluating on my own?” This article provides general information, not advice about any particular claim.
01
Legal Help
Situations That Often Justify a Consultation
A consultation may be worth considering when an injury is significant or ongoing, fault is disputed, the other party denies responsibility, a commercial vehicle is involved, several people may share responsibility, or there are questions about available insurance.
It can also be helpful when an insurer disputes medical treatment, requests extensive information, presents a settlement that is difficult to evaluate, or raises policy exclusions or coverage questions. Consulting an attorney does not require filing a lawsuit. It can simply help clarify the issues.
02
Timing
Why Timing Can Matter Without Rushing a Decision
Evidence can become harder to obtain with time. Vehicles are repaired, video may be overwritten, witnesses move, and memories fade. Florida law also imposes deadlines on different types of claims, but the applicable deadline can depend on the type of case and other circumstances.
That does not mean every injured person should sign a representation agreement immediately. It means important questions should not be ignored indefinitely. If you are unsure whether time-sensitive evidence or legal deadlines are involved, ask a qualified Florida lawyer to evaluate that issue specifically.
03
The Role
What a Personal Injury Lawyer Actually Does
A personal injury attorney may investigate the event, identify relevant insurance, collect records, communicate with insurers, evaluate liability issues, document damages, consult appropriate experts, negotiate a resolution, and, when warranted, prepare a case for litigation.
The exact work depends on the matter. An ethical lawyer should explain the proposed role, fee arrangement, expected communication, major uncertainties, and what information is needed from the client. No lawyer should guarantee a settlement amount or outcome.
04
Preparation
How to Prepare for a Consultation
Bring whatever records you already have, but do not delay a conversation merely because the file is incomplete. Helpful materials can include photographs, a crash or incident report number, insurance information, medical provider names, correspondence from carriers, wage information, and a basic timeline.
Prepare questions too. Ask who would handle the matter, how the firm communicates, what costs may arise, how fees work, what the major issues appear to be, and what the lawyer cannot yet know. A good consultation should leave you better informed even when the answer is that more information is needed.
05
Choosing a Lawyer
Choosing the Right Fit in Brandon
For a Brandon-area injury matter, local familiarity can be useful, but it should not replace substantive experience. Evaluate whether the attorney regularly handles the type of incident involved, communicates clearly, sets realistic expectations, and can explain the process without pressuring you.
Glaros Law serves people with personal injury questions in the Tampa Bay area. If you want to discuss an accident in Brandon, the firm can review the circumstances and explain whether representation may be appropriate.

A crash can turn an ordinary drive through Brandon into a confusing mix of safety concerns, medical questions, vehicle damage, insurance calls, and paperwork. In the first few minutes, the priority is not building a legal case. It is protecting people, getting appropriate help, and preserving accurate information about what happened.
This guide offers general educational information for people dealing with a crash in Brandon or elsewhere in Hillsborough County. It is not a substitute for advice about a specific claim, and Florida rules can change. When a question depends on your facts, insurance policy, injuries, or a legal deadline, consider speaking with a qualified Florida attorney.
01
First Steps
Start With Safety and Medical Needs
If the collision has just occurred, focus first on immediate safety. Move away from active traffic when it is safe to do so, call emergency services when needed, and follow instructions from first responders. If anyone may be injured, medical evaluation matters more than photographs, property damage, or insurance questions.
Some injuries are obvious at the scene. Others may not become clear until later. If symptoms appear or change, seek appropriate medical attention rather than trying to diagnose the problem yourself. Keep discharge papers, appointment information, and medical records together so you can accurately track what care was received.
02
Records & Evidence
Preserve Basic Information While It Is Fresh
When circumstances allow, collect objective information. Useful records can include the names and contact information of drivers and witnesses, insurance details, photographs of vehicle damage, photographs of the roadway and traffic controls, and the location and approximate time of the crash.
Avoid turning documentation into an argument about fault. A calm record of what is visible is more useful than a heated roadside debate. If law enforcement responds, note the agency and any report or incident number provided so the record can be located later.
03
Insurance
Be Careful With Early Insurance Conversations
Insurance carriers often begin gathering information quickly. That is normal, but a person who is still processing the crash may not yet know the full extent of the injuries, vehicle damage, or other losses. Keep communications accurate and factual. Do not guess about speeds, distances, diagnoses, or future recovery.
Policy duties and claim procedures vary. Review the applicable policy documents and written notices rather than relying on assumptions about what an insurer will or will not cover. If a question could materially affect a claim, professional guidance may be appropriate.
04
Records & Evidence
Build One Organized Accident File
A simple file can reduce confusion. Keep the crash report information, photographs, correspondence, medical records, repair estimates, receipts, mileage to appointments, and notes about missed work in one place. A contemporaneous record is easier to understand than trying to reconstruct events months later.
It can also help to keep a short timeline. Record important dates such as the crash, medical visits, calls with insurers, repair inspections, and written notices. The goal is accuracy, not creating a dramatic narrative.
05
Legal Help
When Legal Questions Become Important
A lawyer is not necessary for every minor collision, but legal questions become more important when injuries are significant, fault is disputed, multiple vehicles or commercial parties are involved, insurance coverage is unclear, or an insurer disputes responsibility or damages.
A consultation can help a person understand which issues deserve attention and which records may be relevant. No responsible attorney can determine the value or outcome of a matter from a checklist alone. Every claim depends on its facts, available evidence, applicable law, and insurance coverage.
06
Brandon Context
Brandon-Specific Considerations
Brandon drivers regularly use busy corridors such as Brandon Boulevard, I-75, the Selmon Expressway, Bloomingdale Avenue, and surrounding commercial roads. Congestion, turning movements, lane changes, and merging can produce very different collision scenarios. The location itself does not determine fault; the evidence surrounding the particular crash does.
If you are dealing with injuries after a Brandon-area collision and have questions about your options, Glaros Law can discuss the circumstances and whether the firm may be able to assist.

Community involvement took on record-setting proportions in East Hillsborough this summer when Steve Glaros of
Law Offices of Steven J. Glaros & Associates
was named the 2026 Honorary Mayor of East Hillsborough.
Glaros earned the honorary title after raising $121,746.56 for three local charitable organizations during the 2026 Honorary Mayor’s Race. His fundraising total established a new record for the annual community campaign and helped contribute to an even larger milestone: the two candidates participating in the 2026 race collectively raised $169,643.99 for five local charities.
For Glaros, whose firm brings more than 30 years of combined legal experience to families throughout the Tampa Bay area, the campaign offered an opportunity to extend his community involvement beyond the legal services provided through his Brandon office.

Community Tradition
What Is the East Hillsborough Honorary Mayor’s Race?
Despite the title, the Honorary Mayor of East Hillsborough is not an elected government position. The Honorary Mayor’s Race is a non-political fundraising competition supported by the Valrico FishHawk Chamber of Commerce.
Candidates select local charities or nonprofit organizations they want to support and then spend the campaign organizing fundraising events, conducting community outreach and encouraging residents and businesses to participate. At the end of the campaign, the candidate who raises the most money receives the title of Honorary Mayor for the year.
The structure transforms a friendly community competition into direct support for organizations serving people and animals throughout East Hillsborough and the surrounding Tampa Bay area.
The 2026 race officially began June 1 and included a month of fundraising events and community activities before concluding June 30. The results were celebrated during a July 13 wrap-up event at The Boulevard at FishHawk in Lithia.

Community Impact
Three Local Organizations Supported by the Glaros Campaign
01
Supporting High 5 Inc.
High 5 Inc. provides programs and opportunities designed to support young people in the community. Its work includes youth programming, mentorship and activities intended to provide children with safe and constructive environments in which to learn, participate and grow.
By including High 5 Inc. among his campaign beneficiaries, Glaros directed a portion of the campaign’s fundraising toward programs serving local youth and families.
The organization was one of three beneficiaries sharing in the funds generated throughout Glaros’s month-long campaign.
02
Supporting Impact Program Inc.
Impact Program Inc. was another beneficiary of the 2026 Glaros campaign.
The organization focuses on youth education, prevention and character development, providing programs intended to help young people develop skills and knowledge that can contribute to healthier decisions and stronger futures.
Its inclusion in the campaign expanded the fundraising effort’s support for children and families throughout the East Hillsborough community.
03
Supporting Raining Cats and Dogs Shelter and Sanctuary
The third organization supported by Glaros was Raining Cats and Dogs Shelter and Sanctuary.
The nonprofit provides care for animals while promoting responsible pet ownership and community involvement. Its work adds an animal welfare component to the broader community causes supported through the Honorary Mayor campaign.
Together, High 5 Inc., Impact Program Inc. and Raining Cats and Dogs Shelter and Sanctuary represented three distinct areas of community service connected through a single fundraising campaign.
04
Community Participation
Community Events Helped Drive the Campaign
The Honorary Mayor’s Race is designed to encourage community participation rather than relying solely on individual donations.
Throughout June, Glaros’s campaign included several events created to bring residents, businesses and supporters together while raising money for the selected charities.
Activities included the Mayor’s Summer Splash Bash, music bingo, a Chef Soiree and Online Auction and an Amazing Race-style event.
The variety of events allowed members of the community to participate in different ways while maintaining the central purpose of raising funds for local nonprofit organizations.
That community-driven structure is an important part of the Honorary Mayor program. Local businesses, residents, volunteers and nonprofit organizations have an opportunity to work together, turning individual events and contributions into a much larger collective result.

2026 Campaign Results
The 2026 Race Raised a Record $169,643.99
Glaros was joined in the 2026 Honorary Mayor’s Race by Chris Ciulla, owner of Voodoo Brewing Co. in Valrico.
Ciulla raised $47,897.43 through his campaign, which supported Forgotten Angels and ECHO, the Emergency Care Help Organization.
His fundraising resulted in another first for the program. Ciulla became East Hillsborough’s first-ever Deputy Mayor, creating a new distinction within the Honorary Mayor tradition.

Local Organizations
Five Local Organizations Benefited From the 2026 Race
While the Honorary Mayor title provides a focal point for the annual campaign, the lasting impact of the race can be measured by the organizations receiving the funds.
Glaros’s campaign supported High 5 Inc., Impact Program Inc. and Raining Cats and Dogs Shelter and Sanctuary, while Ciulla’s campaign benefited Forgotten Angels and ECHO.
Forgotten Angels provides assistance to young adults transitioning out of foster care, including support involving housing, education, employment preparation and independent living skills.
ECHO assists individuals and families experiencing hardship by providing access to food, clothing, household necessities, workforce development and other resources intended to help families move toward greater stability.
The five organizations supported during the 2026 campaign serve different populations and needs, but each contributes to the broader network of nonprofit services available throughout East Hillsborough and the Tampa Bay region.

Glaros Law
A Community Milestone for Glaros Law
The 2026 Honorary Mayor campaign represents a significant community milestone for Steve Glaros and Glaros Law.
The
Law Offices of Steven J. Glaros & Associates
serves clients from its Brandon, Florida office in matters involving family law, personal injury and estate planning. The firm’s work regularly involves individuals and families facing significant transitions, from divorce and parenting matters to injuries and long-term family planning. Anyone with questions about one of these matters can contact the firm to schedule a free consultation.
The Honorary Mayor campaign provided a different avenue for community involvement by bringing businesses, residents, nonprofit organizations and volunteers together around organizations serving local needs.
Raising more than $121,000 through a single candidate’s campaign also illustrates what coordinated local participation can accomplish. The result was not attributable to one person alone. Fundraising at that scale depended on donors, sponsors, volunteers, businesses, event participants and the organizations that helped bring the campaign together.

Looking Forward
Continuing the Honorary Mayor Tradition in East Hillsborough
The Honorary Mayor’s Race has become an annual tradition connecting local business leadership with charitable fundraising.
Rather than campaigning for governmental authority, candidates compete to generate support for nonprofit organizations they believe are making a difference in the community.
The model provides participating charities with more than financial support. The campaign also gives nonprofit organizations additional community exposure, introduces their work to residents and businesses and creates opportunities for new relationships that can continue after the race ends.
For the 2026 campaign, that model produced record results.
Steve Glaros concluded the race with $121,746.56 raised for his three selected charities and the title of 2026 Honorary Mayor of East Hillsborough. Chris Ciulla raised another $47,897.43 and became the community’s inaugural Deputy Mayor.
Together, their campaigns generated $169,643.99 for five organizations serving East Hillsborough residents, families, young people and animals.
